So far these are our favourite places / things to do. We can’t wait to find more great places to explore, especially when summer hits! If you’re local, let us know your favourite things to do in Smithers!
7 Family Friendly Things To Do in Smithers, BC
1. Riverside Municipal RV Park & Campground
Well, we haven’t taken in camping, but the trails here are our favourite place to walk. They are dog friendly and well used, so even in the snow, it is easy walking. The trails go along the river and make up several loops into the forest. It looks like it would be really nice in summer and fun for little ones at the playground. We have walked here several times, but yesterday was the first time we saw a moose! I was walking with my head down, as usual, and just as we turned a corner I heard my husband yell and grab us! Yup, she was right there and started walking towards us. Luckily our dog didn’t make a fuss and we turned back down another trail. So, be moose aware!
It’s also right in town and very accessible (located at 3843 19 Ave, Smithers, BC).
2. Skating – Outdoor Rink
This outdoor rink is perfect for learning to skate and playing hockey! It’s located right in town, behind the Fire Station and beside the Tourist Info Centre and is free for public use. I was impressed with how well maintained the ice was too! We’ve only been once so far, but we can’t wait to go back, our daughter had a blast!
Skating tip: a couple weeks ago we skated on a frozen lake. The ice was very bumpy and I didn’t think it would be good for our toddler, but we gave it a try anyways. Turns out, all the bumps and rough surface allowed her to actually stand on her feet, it wasn’t so slippery and it gave her the confidence she needed to keep going! So if you’re teaching little ones to skate, I’d recommend finding an outdoor rink where the ice may not be as “slippery”, it gives them some traction!
3. Cross Country Skiing – Hugs Farm
Although this could be a family friendly activity, I’ve been going solo! Hugs Farm is located only a few minutes outside of Smithers (towards Telkwa, at the end of Laidlaw Rd) and they have a well kept cross country ski track on their family’s organic farm, another free activity! When the clouds clear, the view is amazing! I’d definitely recommend this for beginners too, it’s pretty flat.
4. Main Street
If you’re looking for less active things to do then make sure to check out Main Street! It’s super cute with lots of great boutiques and shops. Even if you’re not into shopping, it’s fun to check out and take in the culture. A few of my favourite shops are The Wooden Mallard (kid and ladies boutique + giftware), McBike and Sport (where I got my cross country skis) and Big Smiles Kids’ Store (toy shop). You can also check out LOVE SMITHERS for more great local shops and services!
5. Sushi
Also located on Main Street (1232 Main Street) is our new favourite sushi – Blue Water Sushi! It is amazing and reminds me how much I missed west coast fresh sushi! We tried many sushi restaurants in Saskatoon and none of them compared to what we were used to in the lower mainland of BC, but this, it is definitely comparable! They are also very family friendly with great booster seats and Paw Patrol colouring pages!
6. Mexican
There are so many great places to eat in Smithers and a good variety of different cuisines! I could have made this post about all the places to eat, but I just picked our top two! If Mexican is your jam then head over to Trackside Cantina, located along the train tracks (3815 Railway Avenue). They are also family friendly and the portions are large, you’ll be well fed!
It was a little snowy when we went, but if you stop by on the clear day, the view of Hudson Bay Mountain is gorgeous!
7. Cruise the Area
When we’re looking for a new area or something more relaxing to do we go for a drive! The other day we drove up to the ski hill to take in the views! One of these days I’ll get brave and strap on my downhill skis….
