1.   Matching Game

My toddler LOVES this simple and fun matching game and it is super easy.

What you’ll need:

  • Wood circles (can be any shape)
  • Fabric the size of the wood shapes
  • Mod podge
  • Paint brush
  • Pen
  • Fabric scissors, preferably pinky shears
  • Paper ice cream bowl & ribbon for packaging (optional)
Wood circles, Mod Podge, were purchased from Michaels and paint brushes were purchased from a dollar store. I have also seen the wood shapes at some dollar stores.

Instructions:

  1. Trace the circles on the fabric (if your fabric has been sitting in a box and wrinkled, you may want to iron it first). Cut two the same of each fabric.
  2. Cut the circles out on the inside of the line. You want the fabric to be slightly smaller than the wood circle. I used pinking shears for the fun zig zag edge, but regular scissors work fine too.
  3. Paint Mod Podge on one side of the circle. Place the fabric on, then paint modge podge on top. Ensure to get the edges to it stays on well.
  4. Repeat for all circles then let dry for a few hours. It will dry clear.
  5. Package in a paper ice cream cup and ribbon for gifting. The paper cup is great for storing the game too, even if it is not a gift.
We had fun playing with this one!

2.   Magnets

You can never have enough good magnets for those family photos, baby cards, calendars, kids schedules and art projects that plaster the fridge!

What you’ll need:

  • Button making kit
  • Magnets smaller than the button size
  • Gorilla Glue (or something similar)
  • 2″ square fabric scraps
  • Pen
  • Fabric scissors
Magnets, button kit and Gorilla Glue were all purchased from Michaels

Instructions:

  1. For the button top, follow the instructions on the button kit. Make sure to use the flat back piece and not the one with the button loop at the back (the kit provided one of each backing).
  2. Use a small dap of Gorilla Glue to secure the magnet to the back. Press together tight with your hands for a few seconds to ensure a strong seal.
  3. Let dry well (several hours at least, just to be sure).
  4. Repeat for all the tiny scraps. These are cute additions to gifts or great for your own fridge. Keep reading below to see how you get get your hands on one of these cute magnets!

3.   Decorative Blocks / Book Ends

This one is fun for the younger kids to do themselves.

What you’ll need:

  • Wooden blocks (could be any size, I used 2×4 scraps)
  • Sand paper
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • Fabric scissors
  • Any size fabric scraps

Instructions:

  1. Sand rough edges of the wood blocks. You could also paint the blocks.
  2. Put a layer of Mod Podge on the block and place fabric scraps on top. You can use any size or shape of fabric scrap. I found it fun to cut out the characters on the fabric.
  3. Make sure to put a layer underneath and over top of all the fabric pieces. When you are done placing the fabric on the wood block there should be a layer of modge podge over the whole block.
  4. Let dry a few hours.

I used this one for a book end, but you could use it for any type of fun decoration. Baby nursery decorations, kids room, living area, kitchen, the possibilities are endless!

4.   Letter Wall Art / Decorations

I am in the process of doing a new room for my toddler and this letter E was the perfect addition. The fabric matches her bedding that I made and will blog about when it’s done!

What you’ll need:

  • Letter of your choice
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • Fabric scissors, I used pinking shears again
  • Any size fabric scraps

Instructions:

  1. Cut strips or any shape of fabric to be placed on the letter. I used strips because I found it easiest to go over the corner edges without being too bulky.
  2. Put a layer of Mod Podge on the letter and place fabric scraps on top. You can also paint the back of the fabric with Mod Podge, then place it on the letter.
  3. Make sure to put a layer underneath and over top of all the fabric pieces. When you are done placing all the fabric on the letter there should be a layer of Mod Podge over the whole thing. I added an extra layer to make sure all corners and edges were secured.
  4. Let dry a few hours. This one took the longest because of the extra Mod Podge.
It has a hole in the back for hanging on the wall, which I hope to get up one day, BUT for now, it looks really cute sitting on my daughters night table. The night table is another one of my DIY projects! And that feather block is from the block decoration turorial above. For that one I painted the block first, then Mod Podged the feather on.
