Homemade Stocking Stuffer for Kids
Okay crafty moms; I’ve got you covered for a super easy homemade stocking stuffer idea that your kids will love. They can play with it at home or on the go! I love how creative you can get with this one too. We chose a nature inspired theme, but the options are endless. Other fun themes could be farm, ocean, animals, construction site, etc. Kids have so much fun creating their own imaginative stories with these story starter rocks. This homemade stocking stuffer will be one to remember!

Supplies needed to make this Homemade Stocking Stuffer for Kids:
- Cotton/linen bag drawstring bag (make your own or grab one at your local dollar store)
- Cricut/cutting machine and iron on vinyl or Sharpie
- Acrylic paint pens (the one’s I have are linked at the end of this post)
- Rocks
Let’s get started – Homemade Stocking Stuffer for Kids
This is the fun part, head outside and go rock hunting! Collect an assortment of small, flat, smooth rocks for painting. If you are making this as a stocker stuffer for kids, you may not want to take your kids with you.
My kids had a blast exploring and looking for the perfect rocks, although the ones they picked were a little big for this homemade stocking stuffer for kids! They stayed toasty warm in their new Jan and Jul gear and I am still amazed that my little guy wore his mitts! This is a big deal in our house because he has been refusing to wear any mitts until he saw these Jan and Jul ones with the diggers on them! He’s obsessed now!
Here’s what my kids are wearing:
- Toasty-Dry Lite Winter Boot (Navy & Pink Birch)
- Cozy-Dry Waterproof Rain Jacket (Nebula Blue & Watermelon Pink)
- Cozy-Dry Waterproof Rain Mitten (Under Construction)
- Toasty-Dry Waterproof Snow Gloves (Watermelon Pink)
- Comfy-Fit Base Layer Set in Cobalt
Wash Rocks – Homemade Stocking Stuffer for Kids
Clean rocks really well. I used warm soapy water and an old toothbrush. Do you use an old toothbrush to clean? Let dry completely before painting.
Paint Rocks – Homemade Stocking Stuffer for Kids
Use acrylic paint to paint rocks. I prefer paint pens, but a brush works too. I painted different things that kids could put together to tell a nature inspired story. Here are some examples:
- bear / bird / insects
- cabin / tent
- fire
- mushroom
- flower / mushroom / tree
- sun / moon / rain / cloud / rainbow
Pick any theme that interests you. Farm, construction, sports, etc.
Make Bag – Homemade Stocking Stuffer for Kids
Sewing is sorta my thing, sooo I made my own bag, but you could buy a small cloth (cotton/linen/canvas) bag from the dollar store and use a Sharpie to write on it. I think the paint pens would also work, or fabric markers!
For making your own, cut fabric 9 inches x 13 inches, sew the side seam first, then fold the top over and sew the top edge for the drawstring to go in. Sew the bottom last, turn. Insert drawstring with a safety pin, tie together and flip the bag right sides out. Press with an iron. The finished bag is approximately 7.5 x 6 inches. I love watching my kids imagine and come up with their own creative stories using the different pictures on the rocks. My little guy is wearing Jan and Jul’s Comfy-Fit Base Layer Set in Cobalt and it is so soft and warm! I wish they had it in my size!
