It’s summer break! And this means finding things to do with kids that do NOT involve screens. Not always easy, and hot summer days can start to feel so long when you’re at home with a crowd of littles. One great way to pass the time is with some easy summer crafts! In this roundup post, I’ve collected some of my very favourite ideas for this fun activity that are perfect for kids of all ages and skill levels. From a watermelon paper fan to a rainbow made from pool noodles or dot-painted rocks (and more), I’ve got something you’ll love. The best part is that I’ve also created a fun Summer Crafts eBook that has so many more ideas than I have room to share here! So, come along with me and pick some easy summer craft ideas for little hands to do this season.
Watermelon Frutti Fan
Melting in the heat? This easy paper Watermelon Frutti Fan is a fun way to cool off! I’ve put together easy instructions and a supply list so all you have to do is follow along, and voila! Your kids just made a new fun craft AND you’ll get a few hours of entertainment out of the finished product. What you’ll need:
- Construction paper (3 pink, 1 green)
- 2 wooden Popsicle sticks
- Paper cutter or scissors
- Glue stick or white glue
- Hot glue
- String and drill bit (optional)
All you need to do is cut some paper, glue it together to make it look like a slice of watermelon, and then make it into a fan and attach it to the Popsicle sticks. Of course, you don’t NEED to make your paper look like a watermelon. Any colour combo works. And if your littles just don’t have the patience for gluing and folding paper, have them colour a paper plate! This is a great alternative that gives the same effect.
Pool Noodle Rainbow Wall Hanging
This kids’ room wall decor piece is a perfect summer craft for kids. Do it while the dollar stores are fully stocked with pool noodles! The supplies are simple:
- A few pool noodles cut into various lengths to create a rainbow effect
- Macrame string in your chosen colours
- Hot glue
- White krafting paper
- White cotton batting (you could also use white tissue paper)
Put a dot of hot glue at the end of your pool noodle and attach the end of the macrame cord. Then, wind the cord tightly all the way down the pool noodle, adding a dot of glue here and there to make sure it stays. Glue the end securely. When all your pool noodles are wrapped (I used 3), glue them together in the shape of a rainbow.
To create the cloud element, glue the paper to the ends of the rainbow and then cover it with the cotton batting.
Older kids can help you with this craft activity from start to finish, while younger kids might want to watch. No matter their age, they will be so thrilled to see their creation hanging over their bed that night!

Dot-Painted Rocks
Looking for a way to work on fine motor skills and help your kids make something beautiful for their own backyard, all at the same time? Try hand-painting rocks with the dot method! It’s simple: create the shapes and patterns you want using dots instead of brush strokes. All you need are some smooth rocks, acrylic paint, and an idea for the end result before you start. When your design is complete, let it dry and then seal it with Mod Podge to protect your rock from the elements. This is a fun summer activity and an easy craft for the whole family! The best part about this project is that with just some rocks and paint, interested artists can spend hours of their summer holidays this way. Perfect.
Pool Noodle Gecko
Looking for a fun DIY this pool/beach season? I created a pool noodle gecko floatie that’s sure to make your kiddos smile! All you need is a selection of pool noodles, scissors, braided utility rope, and my instructions! Family members who grew up in the 90s will remember making pony bead gecko keychains and might want to get in on the action for a little nostalgia. The process of making these geckos is exactly the same as the keychains, just on a bigger scale. Watch the full tutorial and make your kids the talk of the beach!
Build Your Own Mud Kitchen + FREE plans!
This one might be a little more involved than the other craft projects we’ve talked about so far, but I think it counts! This DIY mud kitchen will provide hours of fun this summer, and building it together will give your family some good old-fashioned quality time. It’s the perfect place to create mud pies, soups, and potions, and can even double as a miniature potting bench if your littles like plants! I used mostly scrap wood and built it in a day. (I ordered pizza for supper. No time to cook!) Check out the full post for instructions and a cut list!
I hope I’ve convinced you that with the right ideas combined with a little imagination and creativity, children of all ages can be entertained without resorting to screens all of the time. So, try one of the crafts I’ve explained above, purchase your copy of my summer craft eBook, and prepare for a summer of fun!
Happy crafting!
