I’ve been resistant to leaning into seasonal things because of two thoughts that come up. 1. It costs money and 2. its more work. But lately I’ve been trying to re-wire those two thoughts. As mothers and caregivers we pour our heart into making holidays and seasons magical for our children, so why does it have to stop there? Why not fill our cups too and make it magical for ourselves. Perhaps I’ve been looking at it wrong all this time and maybe it doesn’t have to cost more money and the time that it takes is worth it because it brings JOY?
If you want to lean into the seasons, while it not costing you a fortune, keep reading for our 5 DIY Holiday Drink recipes that you and your loved ones can enjoy all season long.
Although these recipes are all very easy, there are two important things you’ll need for any of the lattes. Some sort of coffee machine that makes an espresso shot size coffee and a milk frother. I’ve linked the ones I have below in the Shop this post section, but don’t worry, if you don’t have either of those you can still make some of the drinks! *This post has been updated, November 2025*
1. DIY Eggnog Latte
It is by no coincidence that this one is first -it’s by far my favourite and a regular for me! It’s also one of the easiest to make. Make your coffee (espresso shot size), I use the smallest setting on our Keurig, you can see the blue light in the photo below. I also use decaf, but use whatever coffee you love.
While your coffee is brewing, pour eggnog into your milk frother and turn it on. My preference is the full fat eggnog because I love it rich and creamy.
When done, add eggnog to coffee. Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon if desired. It’s seriously that easy. Or, if you’re really running late, just add eggnog to your coffee instead of cream, it’s sooo good!
2. DIY Vegan Eggnog
Do you have the new Fraiche Foods Full Hearts cookbook by Jillian Harris? I’ve tried a few recipes, all which I’ve loved, but it is pretty plant based for this carnivorous family, haha. I was really curious to try this vegan eggnog though. A healthier alternative to eggnog, why not give it a try?
It was super easy to make, just put everything in a blender and mix. The flavour was very good, but it doesn’t match when it comes to the consistency of dairy eggnog. That thick creaminess is dreamy. If you cannot have dairy or are vegan then I would definitely recommend this one, as I said, the flavour was super good, it was just that thickness that was missing for me.
3. DIY Gingerbread Latte
If you love gingerbread things then this is a must try! First, you’ll need to make the gingerbread spice mix. The recipe I used is from Fraiche Nutrition, click HERE for the recipe.
Then make your espresso shot sized coffee and warm milk in frother. I tried adding the gingerbread spice mix (1/2 tsp) in with the milk before frothing, but there was too much spice, the milk wouldn’t froth properly so I added the spice to the coffee. If you wanted less flavour, I’d recommend trying adding just a pinch of the spice mix to the milk before frothing. This is what I did for a Pumpkin Spice Latte and it was really good.
Add frothed milk to coffee and sprinkle with gingerbread spice mix, if desired. Best eaten with a ginger snap or gingerbread cookie 🙂
4. DIY Peppermint Mocha or Hot Chocolate
I made both a mocha and hot chocolate, but I actually preferred the hot chocolate! I little someone else LOVED it too! This one was probably my second favourite drink!
For the mocha, make coffee shot size, add 1 tbsp hot chocolate mix (we made ours from Venison for Dinner’s recipe, click HERE for it), then top with boiling water. You could just add half a cup regular strength coffee too.
For the hot chocolate, measure one cup of milk and mix 1 tbsp hot chocolate mix and warm in pot on the stove.
For both, add a tiny drop of peppermint extract, top with whipping cream and crushed candy cane bits!
5. Holiday Teas
A friend recently introduced me to these teas and I love them! So far my favourite is the Gingerbread Spice tea with honey. It is also good with eggnog too. What isn’t good with eggnog? I put it in pancakes, french toast, oatmeal and who knows what else!
These teas are only available for the holiday season so make sure to stock up if you love them 🙂 They are also caffeine free!
