Welcome back to the blog! It’s almost officially the spooky season, which means we are all on the hunt for family-friendly activities. And while it’s fun to visit all the corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and other seasonal things to do, sometimes the best Halloween events include a good old-fashioned Halloween craft time or celebration in your own space. After all, time together is the best kind of Halloween family tradition! In this post, I’m sharing some of my favourite crafts and family Halloween activities. So, put on your Halloween costumes, get out your craft supplies, and pick the one that looks the most fun to you!
Halloween Bucket List Challenge
We all know the typical Halloween activities, such as visiting a haunted house, throwing a Halloween party, or challenging friends to a Halloween costume contest, but I’ve created a digital Halloween Bucket List Challenge to help you think outside the box and create your own family special events this Halloween Season! From visiting a cemetery after the sun sets, to pumpkin decorating, to family Halloween movie night, and more, you’re sure to find an idea that sparks your imagination. The best part? This is a FREE digital download and the perfect way to spark some fall fun for your family.
Spider Web Coasters
If you’re into hosting, having a Halloween party is a fun idea! I’m hosting a girls night Halloween party this year and can’t wait. You could make it adult only or kid friendly with costume prizes, tons of delicious seasonal drinks, themed games, and tasty treats. Of course, you need decor items to really make the party come alive! That’s where my set of 4 Spider Web Coasters comes in. They are perfect for setting the Halloween party mood and protecting your furniture, all at once! They come in black or natural wood tone, and they are the perfect subtle Halloween touch. Not hosting the party? These coasters make the perfect hostess gift to show your appreciation!
Handmade Halloween Costumes
Are you headed to a family-friendly daytime Halloween event? Or trick or treating? Whatever the event, your little ghouls will need a costume! I’ve got some adorable, handmade costume ideas for little ones that are too sweet not to share. My daughter was born in late October, so we didn’t have to wait long before her first Halloween! That first year, she wore a onesie and a pumpkin hat. Simply adorable.
For her second Halloween, I dressed her up as a cupcake! No pattern to share because I was just winging it, but that means it’s easy to copy! I traced a shirt onto fleece, added “cupcake liner” material to the bottom, and added ruffles as “icing” layers and pom poms for “sprinkles”. I topped it off with a cute crocheted cap as the “cherry on top”!
The costumes just keep getting better as she gets older. The third Halloween costume was a little old lady. I made it out of a lady’s dress from our local thrift store and just cut it down and sewed it smaller. I used the cut-off material to make a matching scarf. For the hair, I hand-stitched cotton balls onto a white hat. For the glasses, I knocked out the lenses of kids’ sunglasses from the dollar store, spray-painted the frames black, added a strap (scrap knit fabric), and be-dazzled them with sequins that were glue-gunned to each side. Touched up with lipstick, nail polish, socks for knee highs, and a cute gold pair of Mary Janes, she was on her way!
All of these costumes are fun to make and don’t require much sewing skill to pull off. And the results are so much fun!
Haunted House Silhouette Porch Decor
I think we can all agree that trick-or-treating is one of the Halloween activities that children find the most fun! You can make your house even more fun to visit with my super-easy DIY haunted house silhouette! You only need a few basic supplies:
- Piece of plywood
- Jigsaw
- Staple gun
- Primer
- Black paint
- Orange Halloween string lights
I drew my haunted house form onto the plywood (freehand, but you could create a stencil if you wanted to). I cut it out, painted the whole thing black, stapled the lights to the back, and set it up against the side of my house. It looks so fun, all backlit and ready to frighten (not really) young guests who come to the door looking for candy. You might even call it spook-tacular entertainment! Spooky Halloween Handprint Crafts
Who loves a good handprint craft? This spooky spider print creation is perfect for Halloween and only takes 15 minutes to create! All you need is some white cardstock, black and white acrylic paint, a black pen, and my spider web template thats in our Craft eBook! Paint your little one’s hand with the black paint and press it firmly onto the white cardstock template page under the spider web. Use white paint and the black pen to make eyes, write the year at the bottom, and voila! Spider web handprint craft complete.
Halloween Bat from Fall Leaves
I love easy Halloween crafts! These Halloween bats for wall decor could seriously NOT be any easier. Gather a few pointy fall leaves. (The pointier the better, really.) Paint them black with acrylic black paint. Then, when the black paint is dry, use a white paint pen to draw eyes and fangs for faces! Then, stick them up on walls to decorate your school’s fall festivals or carnival games, or a haunted maze in your living room. They are perfect as Halloween decorations on your front door or stuck on your own pumpkins outside, too! Depending on the shape of your leaves and the paint colours available to you, you could create little ghosts too! Use your imagination on this one.
