Half way friend! It’s week 4 of renovating our 1960s hallway renovation for the One Room Challenges I don’t feel like I am half way, but serious progress has been made and that’s what I’m celebrating this week. I’m very happy to have the sanding done… at least I hope it’s done. Click HERE if you missed last week and if you’re new here, we are renovating our hallway as part of the Spring 2024, One Room Challenge (ORC).
FYI, ORC = One Room Challenge, you’ll see this acronym a lot over the next 8 weeks!
Click the following text or photos below to see my past One Room Challenge transformations! When you have really crappy before photos, it makes the after one’s look even better 😉
Back Entrance Renovation – Fall 2023
Office Renovation – Spring 2023
First, let’s talk about what the One Room Challenge is. Have you heard of it? It’s a biannual event that is held every spring and fall. Anyone with a blog, Instagram or TikTok account is welcome to join the fun. It goes over 8 weeks and each week you share an update on your room. It’s a fun way to connect with other like minded people and be able to encourage each other through all the ups and downs of renovating! I highly encourage you to check out all the other participants HERE.
Before Photos of our hallway
PROJECT GOAL: Remove past layers of low quality renovations and simplify the space by creating a bright, classic hallway that is welcoming and calming.
From a distance it might not look that bad, but our walls are three layers. Wood horizontal shiplap with 1/4″ wallboard over top and then drywall over top of that. Once the drywall was added it made the wall thickness uneven with the door jams and the trim that was put over top was notched out of the drywall and VERY poorly done. Honestly, it just looks like crap.
This hallway is getting renovated from ceiling to floor, however the new flooring will not be put in until the wall is removed on the other side of the house. Still waiting on the Engineer we’ve hired for that…
Progress of our hallway renovation
WEEK 4: This past week I mud, taped and sanded the new drywall ceiling (we added a layer so now our whole ceiling is flush) and I primed it. I also did a TON of work on the door jams, scraped paint, filled holes, sanded and primed. They look SO MUCH better. Yes, I could have replaced the door jams completely, however we are working on a budget and I also want to make use of everything that can be (reasonably) saved.
About the ceiling, the hallway ceiling height was a little higher than the rest of the ceiling. After removing the trim board between the two we realized (we think) that the ceiling in the rest of the house was covered by another sheet of drywall and new popcorn ceiling. We decided to add another layer of drywall to the higher ceiling to make the whole house ceiling level the same. Sometimes it’s hard to explain how our house is, does this make sense?
Next up: add popcorn to the ceiling, re-do the attic box so it’s not such an eye sore and install the ceiling light.
Check back for the Week 5 update to see what light we ended up getting!
Here’s the plan for our DIY Hallway Renovation

Here’s my inspiration. I am still unsure about the beadboard for the walls and unsure about the rug, what do you think?
Just like my past One Room Challenge Renovations, I’ll be keeping track of cost. After all, this is a budget friendly renovation. Next week (week 6) I’ll be sharing a cost update. There hasn’t been a lot yet, but it’s about to go up quickly.
Any questions! Let me know in the comments!
